Milano-San Remo, also known as La Primavera or La Classicissima, is the longest one-day race in professional cycling, covering approximately 290 km from Milan to San Remo on the Italian Riviera. Held annually in March, it marks the first of the five Monuments of cycling and signals the start of the spring classics season.
The race is known for its sheer distance rather than extreme difficulty, with a relatively flat profile that favors both sprinters and attacking riders. The final 30 km are decisive, featuring the Cipressa and Poggio climbs, where attackers try to drop the sprinters before the high-speed descent into San Remo. The Poggio, just 5.4 km from the finish, is often the launching pad for late-race moves.
Milano-San Remo has seen legendary winners, including Eddy Merckx, who holds a record seven victories, as well as Fausto Coppi, Sean Kelly, and modern stars like Mathieu van der Poel.
Its unpredictable nature makes it one of the most thrilling races of the year—sometimes ending in a dramatic solo attack, other times in a tense sprint on the Via Roma. Winning Milano-San Remo is a dream for any rider, cementing their place in cycling history.
