Braquets
Since 2014 –
All of the development categories (except bibittes), including juniors, must follow the gear ratio limitations.
What is a braquet or gear ratio?
The braquet or gear ratio is the ratio between the number of teeth on the front plateau (or crank) which is usually 32,42,45,or 52 teeth versus the number of teeth on the rear cogs (on the rear wheel), which are generally between 12 and 32 teeth. The gathering of cogs on the rear wheel is usually referred to as the cassette.
The FQSC has created a list of restraints for the maximum gear ration allowed for each category. This will ensure that the athlete does not hurt themselves -their knees or muscular development. It alos ensures that the riders will not be able to go too fast too early. The athletes will learn control of speeds before being able to go even faster.
Here are the list a allowed ratios / braquets for each category:
CATÉGORIES | DISTANCE | with 700c wheel | |
Bibitte | none | none | |
Atome | 5,60 m | 42 x 16 | |
Pee-Wee |
6,14 m | 46 x 16 | 2014 and after |
Minime | 7,01 m | 46 x 14 | 2014 and after |
Cadet | 7,62 m | 50 x 14 | 2014 and after |
Junior

|
* Les juniors H n’ont plus de limite de braquet lorsqu’ils courent avec une autre catégorie |
To be able to respect the limits, the athlete can use their derailleur to block the gears that go outside of requirements be setting the high low screws. Be sure to set this up before the day of a competition. The ratios and braquets are verified after each race if the athlete places in the top 10. Use of braquets outside of the restrictions will result in a disqualification.
